Music is an important aspect to life at Marian College. From Year 7, students are given the opportunity to learn an instrument within the context of a Classroom band. These instruments range from flutes and clarinets, to trumpets, trombones and saxophones and also include bass guitar and drums. Before starting at Marian students are given a form to fill out indicating their top three preferences of instruments to learn. This form can be found by clicking on the link below.
In Year 8 students are given an introduction to their choice of keyboard or guitar as well as learning how to, and given opportunities, to compose music using analog and digital methods. Finally in Year 8 students learn about the traditional music from cultures around the world.
Students can choose music as an elective in Years 9 and 10 which allows them to develop their skills on their chosen instrument or voice. Students will also learn about the history of popular music and how to use technology to make and record music. The Year 9 and 10 course is designed to give students a taste of what pathway they would like to take in their senior years.
In their senior years students have the opportunity to follow the VCE and/or VET Music Pathways. Each pathway offers a different focus for the student to attend to depending on their preferences. Both pathways have practical, theory, and analytical elements and both subjects can contribute to a student’s ATAR score in units 3 and 4. If a student is planning on doing VCE Music it is highly recommended that they have a private instrumental tutor.
At Marian we are fortunate to have the services of a number of Instrumental Tutors. These tutors utilise our facilities to teach students: singing, piano, brass, woodwind, strings, guitar and percussion. This private tuition works on a rotation timetable so that students do not miss out on the same class each week. For more information regarding private tuition please click on the link below.
A major part of Marian College is the school’s band and vocal ensembles. Students are encouraged to join the Marian College Concert Band, Choir and/ or Stage Band. These ensembles perform at many Marian College events including: Masses, assemblies, awards night, the art expo and liturgies. The ensembles also perform at community events throughout the year.
